Building up basin leaders

Emerging leaders across the Murray-Darling Basin are being called to nominate for the first round of a new leadership development program focused on securing a sustainable future for the basin.

Applications for the inaugural intake of the program close this Sunday.

Murray-Darling Basin Authority chief executive Andrew McConville said the program is open to anyone, saying they want representation from “community, industry, local government and grassroots leaders who want to work beyond their own patch”.

“The pressures felt in the basin - whether environmental, economic or social - can’t be alleviated without capable people on the ground. That’s why backing local talent matters so much,” he said.

Delivered by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, the program comprises two in-person sessions and online learning and coaching over a 10-month period.

Three separate cohorts will progress through the program, the first commencing in July 2026, with the full roll-out wrapping up in December 2027.
