Deniliquin’s Fire + Rescue NSW brigade was called to the Harfleur St home in east Deniliquin about 6am.
Deputy Captain Les Booth said had it not been for the passer-by, the fire could have done a lot more damage.
“The ute was parked in the carport at the time of the home, and was about three quarters engulfed by the time we arrived,” Dept Capt Booth said.
“The car was destroyed, but because of fire protection the home only suffered minor damage.
“It was kept to the outside of the home, and just a bit of heat damage.”
The Deniliquin brigade responded with two fire appliances and crew, and were on scene about an hour.
Ambulance NSW paramedics and Murray River Police District officers also responded to the emergency call.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Police are investigating.
Firefighter recruitment
Deniliquin FRNSW is currently recruiting for on-call firefighters.
The role of an on-call firefighter is varied, beyond responding to and attending fires.
You could be attending a structure fire one day, then an animal rescue or assisting ambulance the next.
Regional South 3 recruitment officer Hannah Ham said on-call firefighters are a diverse group of people who balance other work, study and family commitments, but enjoy being part of a team and working with people and other emergency services.
Applications are accepted from all community members and are assessed on merit and physical aptitude.
An information session will be held at the station this Wednesday from 6pm.
A barbecue dinner will be provided and Captain Marty Smith said a recruitment officer will be in attendance to answer questions and help complete application forms.
