Car fire sparks investigation

Police are investigating after firefighters were called to a car fire on Bradleys Lane, Deniliquin on Saturday morning.

Receiving the call about 9.30am, the Mid Murray Rural Fire Service says the damage to the car suggests it had been burning for some time before being reported.

While the cause of the blaze is unclear, it is being treated as suspicious at this stage.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 5811 9299 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

Permit period ends

RFS firefighters were kept busy in the final days of the bushfire danger period, receiving calls about a number of permit burns.

Mid Murray Rural Fire Service district officer John Temlett said while some were false alarms, there were some that jumped containment lines with firefighters assisting landholders to bringing them back under control.

Mr Temlett said while the permit period ended yesterday, landholders must still take care when lighting fires.

All landholders have a legal obligation to monitor their fires closely, and to notify the authorities and their neighbours at least 24 hours before they plan to burn.
