And they did not disappoint, both leading throughout to win their respective men’s and women’s divisions.
For Vince, it was his seventh club championship, while Vicki is at about number 13 and growing.
Vince had championship rounds of 76, 72 and 74 for an aggregate 222, finishing four shots clear of runner-up Troy Grant, while Vicki had a runaway win with rounds of 81, 84 and 84 (249) to win by a massive 28 shots from runner-up Pauline Davis.
George Willis won another club B-grade championship by the narrowest of margins, recording a three round total of 263 from runner-up Neville Werner 264; in C-grade Norm Purtill, also a multiple winner, had a solid final round 89 for a total 280, from Peter Seely on 282; and in D-grade Oliver Dellwo was able to hang onto his lead despite a final round 114, finishing with 307 from runner-up Geroge Kenney-Herbert 314.
The women’s B-grade was a close tussle throughout and this continued into the final round, with Lyn Bond holding on to win by a shot to Lyne O’Brien, 297 to 298. Women’s C-grade was also a close contest, with Anita Gorsuch recording a total of 314 to win by two shots from runner-up Leanne Landy 316; and in D-grade Yvonne Holmes raced away in the final round to finish on 353 and record a comfortable win over Vicki Seely 372.
Last Thursday there was a stroke event, won by Leanne Landy net 67 from runner-up Karen Butcher net 70.
In Saturday’s stroke event, the A-grade winner was Troy Grant with net 71 on countback to runner-up Oscar Marshall; B-grade winner was Prue Lloyd net 73 on countback to Phil Hodgkinson; and C-grade winner was Marg Radeski net 74 from runner-up Angus Knuckey 75.
On Monday, our ladies were to the fore in the final round of the Challenge Cup fourball match play pennant competition. Deniliquin played Murray Downs at home, with the winner to claim the pennant cup, after both teams were on nine points after four rounds.
It was an emphatic 5-0 win to the Deni team, securing another trophy for the club. Final ladder positions were: Deniliquin 11, Murray Downs 9, followed by Barham and Rich River.
Congratulations to all members of our winning team.
On Tuesday, there were 27 players for the 9 hole competition, playing the back 9. The winner was Pauline Davis with 13 points on countback to Jan Lord.
Wednesday’s stableford event was played in glorious autumn conditions and this was reflected in some good scores, especially in A-grade.
The grade winner was Colin Drummond with 41 points from Tom Maw on 40; B-grade winner Ron Friend 36 from runner-up Ken Maher 35, and C-grade winner Bob Landy on 37 from runner-up Lachlan MacDonald 35.
Coming up we have a stableford event tomorrow, then next week it is 9 holes stroke on Tuesday, and stableford on Wednesday and Thursday, with the ladies playing for the Rita Barnes Goblet on Thursday.
The next four-person ambrose off the gold tees will be a 9 holes Sunday Social on April 12. Team entry is $40, with shotgun start at noon. On completion there will be live music from 3pm and the bistro open all day. Book at the Pro Shop.
The following day, Deniliquin Golf Club will host the Goulburn Valley Veterans Golf Association for its annual visit.
It will be a busy Easter at the club, starting tonight with a special seafood menu, happy hour from 6pm and raffle tickets on sale from 6pm with draws at 7pm.
The club and bistro will be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday for lunch and dinner, and the pro shop open every day over Easter from 8am to 5pm.
