Five chickens were beheaded and others are missing from a coop at a Pindara Lane property in Deniliquin.
The deceased birds were discovered about noon Wednesday.
They had last been checked at about 5.30pm Tuesday.
Police said three more chickens were missing from the coop, and are believed to have been stolen.
Chief Inspector Michael Fuller said investigations are ongoing in relation to this act of animal cruelty and stealing.
