Colourful send-off planned for Brenda

Brenda Norman.

Brenda Norman may have only just conquered the 20 Bridges Swim in America in July, but she’s already back training for her next challenge.

Her goal is to take on the North Channel Swim in the United Kingdom in September.

It is one of the world’s most challenging ocean swims, only completed by 108 people to date.

All of Ms Norman’s swims - starting with her successful crossing of the English Channel in 2018 - have been with the goal of raising funding and awareness for youth mental health initiatives.

Through Channel4Change she partners with the Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group to make training and wellbeing events available to the community.

In thanks of her efforts, Deni MHAG is holding a fundraising event in September.

It will double as a send-off for Ms Norman.

The Jelly Fish Color Run is so called because Ms Norman will have to tackle the stinging marine animal during her swim.

It will be held at Deniliquin Memorial Park on Sunday, September 10 from 10.30am to 1pm.

Deni MHAG member Lourene Liebenberg said it’s a chance for the community to show Ms Norman she has their full support.

“We are asking the community to get involved, to come along and to participate in a fun morning, with a focus on ‘being active’ as part of the five ways to wellbeing,” Mrs Liebenberg said.

“Just as importantly we want to celebrate Brenda’s achievements and wish her luck on her swim.”

The North Channel Swim spans 34.5km between Ireland and Scotland, and swimmers face many challenges.

The water temperature will be frosty at 12 to15 degrees, tides strong, rapidly changing weather conditions, rocky shore lines and a limited time frame to complete the swim.

“The channel is also known for numerous jelly fish (including lion’s mane), and for this reason we are adding a bit of a jelly fish theme to the Color Run event,” Mrs Liebenberg said.

“Details around this will be shared closer to the time.

“For now, save the date.

“Brenda will be there and we want her to feel Deni’s love as she sets off in attempting yet another challenge.”
