While it is encouraging that a small number of employees have secured redeployment opportunities within the company, this remains a significant loss for our community and a difficult outcome for many local families.
My thoughts, and the thoughts of council, are with every employee and family affected by this announcement.
For those impacted, this is more than the loss of a job. It brings uncertainty, financial pressure and concerns about the future.
The rice industry has been part of the fabric of Deniliquin for generations, and these job losses will be felt far beyond the mill.
The impacts will flow through local businesses, contractors, service providers, schools, sporting clubs and community organisations, affecting the broader social and economic wellbeing of our region.
These job cuts are a direct consequence of Federal Government water reform policies, particularly water buybacks, which have reduced the volume of productive water available to irrigators.
For years, our community has participated in consultations, engaged directly with governments and spoken out about the risks these policies pose to regional industries and jobs.
Sadly, today's announcement demonstrates those concerns have become a reality.
When productive water leaves our region, the consequences are felt across the entire supply chain, from farms and processors through to local businesses and employment opportunities.
Communities like Deniliquin bear the cost of these decisions.
Council will support any initiative that helps affected workers and their families remain in our community and transition into new employment opportunities.
Discussions are already being scheduled with Workforce Australia and other relevant agencies to explore what support, retraining and employment pathways may be available for those impacted.
Right now, our priority is ensuring those affected know they are not facing this challenge alone.
Deniliquin is a strong and resilient community, and we will work alongside government, industry and support agencies to help affected families navigate the road ahead while continuing to advocate for a sustainable future for our region.
