On behalf of Edward River Council, I wish to acknowledge Sussan Ley’s decision to step back from political life following her recent resignation as Member for Farrer.
We are deeply grateful to Sussan for the 25 years that she has served our electorate with consistency and commitment, maintaining a strong presence across the Edward River region and engaging with our communities.
Throughout her long parliamentary career, Sussan made history as the first woman to hold several senior leadership roles within the Liberal Party.
Her work across ministerial portfolios, including health, sport and aged care, and her involvement in significant national policy initiatives, reflects a record of service that has left a lasting imprint.
Her personal journey, having migrated to Australia at the age of 13, has also shaped a public life marked by resilience and dedication.
Our community has directly benefitted from more than $578 million in regional funding that Sussan has secured for the Farrer electorate since 2019, including allocations for local roads, community infrastructure, agricultural support and volunteer initiatives
Locally, her impact has been visible through infrastructure projects such as the refurbishment of the Crossing Cafe and Peppin Heritage Centre, the Town Hall redevelopment and significant earthworks and drainage at Rotary Park.
We have benefitted from her support to cultural and arts initiatives including the Outback Theatre for Young People and various sporting and community groups over the years.
Council thanks Sussan for her loyal representation and extends our best wishes as she enters the next chapter of her life.
Her departure marks an important moment for our region, and we look forward to the community’s opportunity to elect a new representative in the forthcoming byelection.
Yours etc.
Cr Ashley Hall
Mayor, Edward River Council
