It marks a welcome return of live performances to the beautiful Art Deco theatre; it’s character and charm, providing a perfect backdrop for Allegro Theatre Company’s full-scale musical revue.
Set against the backdrop of Lake Mulwala, the show is a witty original musical inspired by the glamour, gossip and over-the-top antics of reality television.
It follows a group of larger-than-life women whose friendships, feuds, secrets and scandals are every bit as entertaining as the lives they lead.
Brenda Spilva, who plays Babette Bellini, said the show balances comedy with heart.
“It’s such a funny and clever show, but there’s also real heart in it,” Brenda said.
“The characters are exaggerated, but there’s something very familiar in them too.”
Rachel Hart is Lulu Deliconte and said rehearsals had been filled with laughter.
“It’s chaotic in the best way,” Rachel said.
“Every rehearsal ends in laughter; it’s impossible not to break character,”
Leading the cast is Julie McBurnie as Penny Quinoa St. Simone, the eccentric Christian hand model behind “Penny’s Pinot,” alongside Dianne McNamara as Beezus Horowitz, Sofia Heimowitz as Joanne Johnson, and Megan French as Gypsy.
Adding to the fun are Liam Keane and Sean Watson, who appear in a range of cameo and supporting roles that bring extra colour, comedy and chaos to the stage.
Musical director, Barbara Hird and cast members at auditions earlier this year.
The ensemble reflects the true spirit of community theatre, with Allegro members ranging from just 14 years old through to Bev, who is in her 80s, both contributing behind the scenes with costumes and lighting.
The Real Housewives of Lake Mulwala is a rare reminder of the strength of community theatre, where experience and youthful energy combine to create something truly special.
Under the direction of Catherine McBurnie, the original work by Molly Bell blends sharp humour, clever storytelling and catchy musical numbers, while musical director, Barbara Hird and choreographer, Raechel Andreson bring energy, depth and personality to the score.
The show is packed with cheeky humour and playful satire, while celebrating friendship, resilience and the warm spirit of regional communities.
“It feels like coming home,” Catherine said of the return to Yarrawonga Town Hall.
With unforgettable characters, laugh-out-loud comedy, spectacular costumes and sensational music, The Real Housewives of Lake Mulwala is set to be one of the region’s standout entertainment events of the year.
So, gather your friends, chill the bubbles, and prepare for a night where the gossip is outrageous, the music is infectious, and the housewives prove they have nothing left to prove.
