Dahlsen’s Mitre 10 employee Donna Bentley shaved her head to support the Leukaemia Foundation.
Shaving alongside her was her mother Shirley Myles, who came to Deniliquin for Easter specifically to go under the clippers alongside her daughter.
Donna’s husband Rick Bentley also had his facial hair dyed to raise extra funds.
With the support of her employers, Donna made the shave a community event at the Hardinge St store.
Shoppers and supporters stopped by between noon to 2pm to contribute and take part in the activities.
There were sausages in bread being sold for $3, or guests could have their hair temporarily coloured with spray for $5.
Donna said while donations are still open and being counted, she’s so far collected about $1981.
“We still have to count the money from the tin, including from the sausage sizzle, coloured hair and people who donated extra to shave part of my hair.”
The donation tin is still available in store until the end of this week, and news of the shave has also been shared with the Mitre 10 network to try and increase donations.
“I’m not sure yet, but I’d be surprised if we weren’t over the $2500 mark,” Donna said on Wednesday.
“I’m very happy with it, the community is amazing so thanks to them.
“The staff did a wonderful job and (Dahlsen’s Mitre 10 store manager) Katrina was all over it.
“And to have my mum come up all the way from Bacchus Marsh and do it with me was very special.
“We also want to give a thanks to Mel (Clarke) who ran the barbecue like a boss.”
Donna said she is still getting used to her new hairstyle.
“It is hard to describe; it still feels like there is hair there, but it isn’t.”
“It’s funny because some of the kids have commented that it looks like my husband Rick’s hair.
“Also, to a lot of the customers who come in with less hair, I tell them I wanted to look like them.”
“Although it is growing back pretty quickly.”
Donna said she has plans to run other fundraising events, with a particular passion in also raising awareness of depression and mental health support.
