The announcement from the NSW Department of Education this week provides assurance to district families who were considering their school options following a fire on November 29 which destroyed most of the school’s classrooms.
Initially, learning will resume in temporary classrooms as longer-terms plans are put in place.
But it will ensure the school community is co-located on one site again.
“To ensure we minimise disruption to teaching and learning, while impacted facilities are rebuilt, we will be building a temporary school on a section of the school oval,” a NSW Department of Education spokesperson said.
“Our plan is to have students learning from the temporary school from day one of Term 1 2026.
“The NSW Government is fully committed to rebuilding Deniliquin High School’s impacted facilities as quickly as possible to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.
“Independent hygienists have been engaged and were on the school site on December 1 and will continue their assessments over the coming days.
“Their expert advice will guide the next steps in safely reopening areas of the school and planning for interim learning arrangements.”
Work on the temporary may begin this week and is expected to include:
• installing temporary demountable classrooms, including specialist teaching spaces such as science laboratories, technology and applied science facilities, support classes and staff rooms;
• installing sewage and drainage systems; and
• electrical and plumbing works.
With one more week of this term remaining, face-to-face teaching will continue to be offered at other local campuses to complete the year.
Year 7 are at the Riverina Christian College site, Year 8 and Support Unit students are at Edward Public School, Year 9 at Deni South, Year 10 at Deni North and Year 11 at Deni TAFE.
All year groups continue to be supported and taught by Deniliquin High School staff.
Thirty classrooms, the school library and other staff and student spaces were destroyed by a fire which started at the school about 12.45am on Saturday, November 29.
In the days following, two teenagers were arrested and charged with alleged aggravated break and enter and destroy property by fire in company.
The same two teenagers were later also charged with a separate break-in and malicious damage at Deniliquin South School.
Both were granted conditional bail to appear before Children’s Court in Deniliquin this week, with all cases adjourned to January 14.
Police has said they do not expect to make any further arrests in relation to the incidents.
