The weekend began with a memorial service at the Deniliquin Cenotaph, where veterans and community members came together to honour those who served.
Edward River Council Mayor Ashley Hall opened the ceremony with a heartfelt welcome, followed by Reverend Tim Fogo, who led prayers for peace and remembrance.
Wreaths were laid by members of the community, including Russel Brain on behalf of Riverina Vietnam Veterans, Cr Hall on behalf of the Deniliquin community, John Harris on behalf of the Deni RSL Sub-branch, Bob Crampton on behalf of the Deni RSL Club, Sing Australia and widows of Vietnam Veterans.
The Last Post and Reveille were performed, and the Deniliquin’s 307 Army Cadet unit respectfully raised and lowered the flag in tribute.
Although the reunion is held in the Riverina, it remains open to veterans from all regions, reflecting the inclusive spirit and enduring bonds of the veteran community.
Commemorations continued on Saturday evening, when veterans and guests gathered at the Deniliquin RSL for a dinner and dance.
Stories were shared, friendships rekindled, and laughter filled the room.
The atmosphere was warm and celebratory, a testament to the strength of connection among those who served.
On Sunday, the reunion concluded with a relaxed barbecue lunch, giving everyone one last chance to catch up before heading home.
Now in its 46th year, the Riverina Vietnam Veterans Reunion stands as the longest-running consecutive event of its kind in Australia, honouring service, sacrifice, and the enduring camaraderie of those who answered the call.
