It’s only a few more days until Christmas. It seems no one can stop it.
We can see the festive lights around, hear Christmas carols, and feel the growing anticipation for the celebration of Christmas.
Whether we like it or not, Christmas is coming.
It reminds us that God is with us - the ‘Emmanuel’ - and the hope we’re waiting for.
He is the reason for Christmas, the central figure of our celebration.
But despite the joy Christmas brings, many are still trapped in loneliness and sadness, living as if there is no hope.
What makes you sad and lonely this Christmas? Some people say “loneliness is a widespread and growing issue globally, most especially in the places devastated by war”.
It is recognised as a major public health concern, with statistics showing roughly one in six people worldwide feel lonely, especially young adults.
Loneliness isn't about being alone. People can feel lonely in a crowd, even in a marriage, when their social needs aren't met.
Some are lonely because of the loss of their loved one, others because of relationship breakdowns, health issues, and many more.
They say that when a person is lonely, it increases the risk for anxiety, depression, heart disease, and even stroke.
Do not lose heart. The Savior is coming to help us. He will help us see the light again.
Christmas always reminds us that true and lasting joy isn’t found in worldly pleasures, but in God, through union with Christ.
St John Chrysostom said, “pleasure comes from without, and joy comes from within”.
