His efforts have spanned for more than two decades - both professionally and privately - and has earned him this year’s Edward River Council Environmental Citizen of the Year Award.
Also known as the Bill & Elwyn Hermiston Memorial Award, it recognises a resident who has made a significant contribution to natural resource management, biodiversity, and environmental conservation within the Edward River Region.
Its name pays tribute to former Conargo Shire Councillor Bill Hermiston and his wife Elwyn, who were leaders for environmental change within the shire and made significant contributions to sustainable farming and good farming practice.
“Over more than 25 years, Michael has played a pivotal role in restoring ecosystems, protecting biodiversity and strengthening sustainable water management across the region,” Mr Pisasale’s citation read.
“His leadership of major initiatives such as the Mid Murray Wetlands and Ephemeral Creek Project has improved environmental water delivery and restored more than 2000 private wetlands and numerous creeks, while carefully balancing environmental, agricultural and community needs.
“On his own property, Michael has transformed underutilised farmland into a thriving wetland, using it as a living classroom for students, landholders and community groups.
“Widely recognised for his warm and collaborative approach, Michael brings people together across government, environmental and farming sectors to achieve shared goals.
“Michael’s work not only protects biodiversity today but also educates and empowers the community to maintain a healthy, sustainable landscape.”
