Residents woken by “explosions” reported a backyard fire to Deniliquin’s Fire + Rescue NSW crew about 12.34am.
Acting Captain Les Booth said when firefighters arrived at the home, they were told some aerosol cans had been added to a drum fire.
The fire was extinguished, and firefighters left about half an hour later.
Act Capt Booth said whether full or empty, aerosol containers should never be anywhere near flames.
“Anything can go wrong,” he said.
Heat causes pressurised containers to explode violently, which can send metal shrapnel and fire outward without warning.
Toxic fumes may also be released, harming lungs and the environment.
Even empty cans can rupture, causing serious injury, fires, and property damage to people nearby and emergency responders alike.
