Fire Danger Period ends

The Bush Fire Danger Period ends on March 31 across the Deniliquin district and Southern Riverina, but landholders are reminded that legal responsibilities continue year round.

While permits are no longer required outside the declared danger period, anyone planning a burn must still notify before lighting up.

Residents undertaking pile burns, stubble burns or any other hazard‑reduction activity must:

• Notify the NSW Rural Fire Service at least 24 hours beforehand via www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify.

• Notify neighbours at least 24 hours prior.

• Notify their brigade captain on the morning of the burn.

These steps are mandatory. Failing to notify is an offence under NSW legislation and can attract fines of $1100 or more.

Local brigades encourage landholders to only conduct safe hazard reduction in cooler weather, and remind the community that responsible fire management continues beyond the official danger period.
