Acting Captain Les Booth said the holiday period often brings added risks, with decorations, cooking and new gifts increasing the risks.
“It’s important to not overload power boards, especially with Christmas lights and other decorations,” he said.
Act Capt Booth also urged households to check that smoke alarms are working, and to never leave cooking unattended.
“That’s a very important one, whether it’s inside or outside on the barbecue, it should be watched,” he added.
With scooters and other lithium battery-operated gifts proving popular this year, Act Capt Booth warned against leaving them to charge unattended. He said overcharging can also create risks.
“A lot of fires get started from that, especially recently, so it looks to be a growing issue,” he said.
The message is simple - enjoy the festive season, but do so safely.
