The day will allow people and families to meet our local firefighters, explore the trucks and specialised gear, and pick up a few lifesaving tips, including how a working smoke alarm can make all the difference as we head into winter.
Acting Captain Les Booth encourages the community to come down.
“It’ll be a great day to check out the station, kids can go through the fire trucks, it’ll be fun.”
Roo warning
We’ve said it several times already, but we’ll say it again.
Motorists are urged to be extra cautious of kangaroos and other wildlife.
And it’s not just on the stretch between Deni and Echuca you need to be wary.
A Talkback correspondent managed to collect a roo just 5km out of town this week, near the Deni Ute Muster site, proving once again that the roos are far more committed to meeting us than we are to meeting them.
They’re lively at dawn, restless at dusk, however this particular roo was hit mid-afternoon, showing they are truly unpredictable.
With collision data showing a spike in kangaroo incidents in winter months, take it steady on the outskirts and keep an eye on the long grass.
Rams ball hunt
Footy fans at Hardinge St were treated to an unexpected sideshow on the weekend when a kick in the Rams and Numurkah match snuck underneath the goal nets and vanished among parked cars.
One Rams player dutifully climbed under the net and jogged off to retrieve it, but disappeared just long enough that the crowd started wondering if he’d gone home.
He eventually re‑emerged, triumphant, but wiping dirt from his jumper as he returned to the field after seemingly shuffling under a car to rescue the runaway Sherrin.
Vote for volunteer heroes
After a big response to nominations, voting has now opened for the 2026 Community Volunteer Awards.
The Adult and Senior Volunteer of the Year categories are now in the hands of the community, who can cast one vote per category online, by visiting https://www.edwardriver.nsw.gov.au/Community/Community-Volunteer-Awards-2026.
Voting closes May 15, and the winners will be revealed at a Volunteer Celebration Lunch during National Volunteers Week.
May the 4th be with you
Although it was yesterday, it’s always good to celebrate international Star Wars day.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just enjoy an excuse to quote the classics, May the Fourth is always a good moment to tip the hat to the galaxy far, far away.
Got Tech Questions?
If your mobile has been misbehaving, your plan makes no sense, or you just want someone to explain the difference between a password and a passcode, Switched On Mobiles is bringing a free Tech Talk session to the Edward River Library.
They’ll be there on Thursday, May 21 from 1.30pm to 2.30pm, covering mobiles, plans, online safety and general tech help, with plenty of time for questions.
