A ‘smoke scare’ has prompted more warnings from Deniliquin Fire + Rescue regarding regular maintenance of wood burning fires this winter.

The brigade was called to a Harfleur St home which had filled with smoke about 8.40pm Tuesday.
Brigade captain Martin Smith said the scare was caused by a block in the chimney.
“They went to light the heater, and the whole house filled up with smoke.
“There was a block, which we removed. We also cleaned out the fire box and ventilated the home, and checked the area with a thermal imaging camera before handing back to the occupants.
“It’s a timely reminder to ensure you’re regularly inspecting your heaters and chimneys.”
Growth opportunities explored
The success of last week’s Unlocking Business Growth in the Visitor Economy event has highlighted the importance of continuing to grow tourism in the region.
Presented by Edward River Council, in collaboration with the Deniliquin Business Chamber, the event drew a strong crowd of around 50 local business owners, managers and staff to the Town Hall.
They were all eager to share ideas and explore new ways to grow the region’s tourism sector.
The atmosphere was one of enthusiasm, with lively discussions sparking fresh thinking and future possibilities.

Market on tomorrow
Don’t let the cold weather deter you from getting out and about in the Deniliquin CBD this weekend.
There’s still plenty to explore, with retail and service businesses still open.
Get your winter woolies on and support local businesses, and treat yourself to something delicious at one of the eateries.
An added bonus in the CBD this weekend will be the monthly Deniliquin Lions Community market.
Held in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens, you’ll find local and visiting makers, producers and collectors ready to entice.
You’ll often find clothing, homewares, bric-a-brac, plants, health and beauty products and sometimes event locally produced meat and fruits and vegetables.
Don’t forget to support the Deniliquin Lions catering van, and for dessert you may find the Deniliquin Girl Guides selling hot cinnamon and jam donuts.
The market is held the fourth Saturday of each month, from 8am to noon.

Footpath upgrades begin
Edward River Council is upgrading footpaths in Russell St, Deniliquin - between Henry St and Wilkinson St.
Works started this week and are expected to take three weeks, depending on the weather.
The footpath will be reconstructed and expanded to a width of 1.5m.
There may be some inconvenience to pedestrians during the works and some impact to residents on accessing their properties while the section of footpath through their driveway is being replaced, however council will work with residents to reduce the impact.
