One experienced angler landed what was arguably the “catch of the day”... himself!
In a moment that will no doubt become Challenge folklore, he managed to hook his own arm, with the estimated 186cm “specimen” safely released back into the wild after some gentle teasing from mates.
A rogue boat also caused a stir when it was spotted drifting freely down the river after slipping its moorings.
A quick rescue mission brought it back to shore, proving that even the vessels get a little too relaxed during Challenge weekend.
And in one of the weekend’s more memorable jump-scares, a young competitor got the fright of his life when the tractor he was sitting on suddenly roared to life, thanks to a mischievous adult armed with a remote control.
And the Jefferies family will be a few dollars shorter than they should have been thanks to the family accidentally bidding against each other, much to the annoyance of Andrew ‘Jaffas’ Jefferies, who knew it would be coming out of his pocket.
All in all a great weekend, with some quality memories made.

Modern quilting comes to life at Peppin Heritage Centre
A burst of colour and contemporary craftsmanship is set to brighten Deniliquin, with the Peppin Heritage Centre hosting Ahead of the Curve: Australian Modern Quilts from February 23 to April 26, 2026.
The exhibition celebrates the creativity of Australia’s modern quilters, showcasing works that explore the artistic and technical possibilities of curved design.
Among the featured pieces is Up, Down and All Around by acclaimed textile artist Rachael Daisy Dodd.
Presented by Edward River Council, the exhibition will be held at the Peppin Heritage Centre Gallery, 295 George St, offering locals and visitors the chance to experience the evolution of modern quilting in a vibrant, contemporary display.
Council launches ‘Friends of the Town Hall’ volunteer program
Edward River Council is inviting community members to be part of a new Friends of the Town Hall volunteer program, helping bring even more life and connection to the beautifully restored Deniliquin Town Hall.
Since opening its doors in 1876, the Town Hall has stood as a gathering place through celebrations, performances and moments that have shaped the Edward River community.
After its stunning renovation and reopening in February 2023, the Hall is once again establishing itself as the town’s cultural hub; hosting performances, workshops, weddings, corporate events and more.
Volunteering as a Friend of the Town Hall is a chance to be part of this legacy. Volunteers will help welcome visitors, support events, and share the Hall’s rich history through guided tours.
It’s a flexible and occasional commitment, perfect for anyone who wants to contribute without taking on regular shifts.
“We know there are many passionate, community‑minded locals who want to be involved, and this is a fantastic way to help build a vibrant cultural venue for our region,” said Mayor of Edward River, Ashley Hall.
“If you love history, culture, the arts, or simply enjoy meeting new people, we’d love to hear from you.”
Council is seeking volunteers who are enthusiastic, reliable and customer‑focused, and who are proud to represent Council’s organisational values. Training and support will be provided.
Examples of the types of events the Friends of the Town Hall may work to support include: the Summer Movie Series, Australia Day celebrations, Seniors Week events, History Week tours and more.
