Now in its 13th year, the national initiative helps researchers track bird populations across the country and identify which species are thriving and which may be in decline.
Getting involved is simple. Participants are asked to spend 20 minutes in one location, record the birds they see and count how many of each species are present.
Results can then be submitted online or through the Aussie Bird Count app, which includes a field guide to assist with bird identification.
For more information or to register, visit the Aussie Bird Count website.
Bathurst 1000 to remember
There would have been plenty of tired eyes around Deniliquin on Monday morning after another dramatic Bathurst 1000 kept motorsport fans glued to their televisions throughout Sunday afternoon.
Australia's Great Race once again delivered the excitement, strategy and heartbreak that has made Mount Panorama a national institution for generations.
Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazlewood claimed victory after some drama as the race leader Anton De Pasquale (Team 18) suffered a dramatic fuel miscalculation and sputtered out during the final lap, handing the victory to Kostecki.
From family barbecues and loungerooms to local pubs and clubs, many Deniliquin residents would have spent the day following every lap, every safety car and every pit stop as the battle unfolded on the mountain.
Deniliquin Seniors' Services Expo
A reminder that the Deniliquin Seniors' Services Expo will be held at the Deniliquin RSL Club from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday, October 14.
The free community event will bring together a wide range of service providers, support organisations and health professionals from Deniliquin and surrounding areas, offering information for older residents, their families, carers and support networks.
Visitors will have the opportunity to speak directly with service providers, learn about available programs, ask questions and find out how to access support services in the region.
A series of lightning talks will run from 10.30am to noon in the Mountbatten Room, covering topics including ageing naturally, preventative kidney health care, the Wellness 2 Age program and recognising coercive control.
Lucky door prizes, giveaways and light refreshments will be available throughout the day.
For catering purposes, organisers ask attendees to register their interest. For more information, contact Cassie Biggs on 0448 005 260 or email cbiggs@csu.edu.au.
HSC exams begin
Today, October 13, marks the start of the 2026 HSC exams, with English Paper 1 kicking off what will be a challenging few weeks for Year 12 students across the state.
The HSC examination period runs from October 13 through to November 5, before results are released on December 16.
The Pastoral Times would like to wish all Deniliquin High School students, and every local Year 12 sitting exams this year, the very best of luck.
School’s back
School zones were back in force across NSW as of yesterday, October 12, as the new school term officially begins.
Motorists are reminded that 40km/h school zone limits still apply wherever signs indicate and are urged to take extra care around school precincts, with enforcement now active for the term.
It is important to keep an eye out for young people crossing the road or riding their bikes on the way to school.
