It was a wild and windy weekend for the 2025 SunRice Spring Classic, played over Saturday and Sunday.

Players had to brave unfamiliar elements for this time of year, especially on Saturday in conditions not conducive to good golf.
But it did not hinder the scoring, with Susan Butcher and Denise Hunter recording an impressive 50 points to take out Saturday’s women’s competition from runners-up Ruth Peacock and Anita Gorsuch, while in the men’s division Peter Thompson and Tom Bult had 47 points from runners-up Noel Swainger and Bryan Bennett 46.
There was good scoring again on Sunday, when Marg Radeski and Colleen Henderson won the women’s division with 48 points from runners-up Kerran Leetham and Sarah Lugsdin on 45, and to keep it in the family John Radeski teamed up with Norm Purtill to win the men’s division with 47 points from runners-up Brian Bourke and Kris Priest on 46.
In the 36 hole events the women’s winners were Marg Radeski and Colleen Henderson on 92 points from runners-up Sarah Aitken and Mandy Phyland 90, and the men’s 36 hole winners were Brian Bourke and Kris Priest with 91 points, a shot clear of runners-up John Radeski and Norm Purtill 90.
Scratch winners were Kerran Leetham and Sarah Lugsdin in the women’s division, and Brian Bourke and Kris Priest in the women’s division.
Last Thursday was a stroke event won by Marg Rothwell with net 67 from runner-up Leanne Landy 68.
In Wednesday’s stableford event, the A-grade winner was Peter Joice with 40 points from runner-up Mark Thomas 37, and in B-grade Phil Gatacre 36 points from runner-up Graeme Butcher 35.
On Monday, a small group from Deni travelled to Mooroopna for the final round of the GV Veterans Golf Association 2025 championships, the winner of which will be announced next month.
None of the locals figured in the winners’ list for the day’s event; best performed were Graeme Willoughby and Garry Baker, who featured in the ball comp.
Coming up we have the Deniliquin High School ‘Face the Tee’ fundraiser tonight, which is 9 hole 4-person ambrose from the gold tees, with a 5.30pm shotgun start.
If you cannot play, you can still support the event by purchasing a ball in the ‘501 ball drop’, for a chance to win the $1000 first prize.
Saturday is a stableford event, then next week we have 2-person ambrose on Tuesday, followed by stableford events on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
If you have spare used golf balls that are suitable for the driving range, they would be welcomed by the golf club, as balls are disappearing from the driving range, forcing the club to purchase replacements.
Any help with the donation of secondhand balls would be appreciated.
Anyone purchasing golf balls from the dispensing machine at the range is asked to ensure they are only used on the practice fairway so they can be collected and re-used.
Please keep in mind Friday night fun tonight, with happy hour from 6pm, and raffle tickets available from 6pm with draws scheduled for 7pm.
And finally, there’s great news with the opening announced of Flagstick Bistro on December 1.
The bistro will be open six days a week (closed Tuesday) for lunch and dinner and available for functions, including pre-Xmas.
Give Sophie a buzz to make a booking or for more details.
