Dry grass on the edge of the railway line was alight.
Fortunately, an alert resident contacted the fire brigade and it was put out quickly.
Thank God we didn’t have the severe wind at the time.

Speaking of the wind, how did you handle it on Wednesday?
It would certainly have been interesting to know the speed it was travelling.
Those travelling north on the highway needed a firm grip on the steering wheel to prevent being blown into the path of oncoming traffic.
There would also have been many gardens affected, but hopefully, they will bounce back in the not too distant future.

It’s amazing who you can run into when you are on holidays.
A woman who grew up here is currently overseas pursuing her diving interests.
On a recent dive she was accompanied by a Jetstar pilot.
She told him she had a friend from Mathoura who was a pilot, and asked if he knew him.
The senior pilot told her he knew him very well.

Parents are being warned to watch their children carefully as snakes are on the move.
They have been seen in the Conargo St area.
But I’m sure this is not the only part of town impacted, and our youngsters are too precious to lose.

After many years as your columnist, I have decided it’s time to pass the torch.
I intend to retire from writing the ‘Mathoura Diary’ column at the end of this year.
I would love for someone to take over from me, to ensure local news is provided to the Deniliquin Pastoral Times each week.
If you’d like to know more about what this entails, or would like to volunteer for the job, please contact me, or Pastoral Times content manager Zoe McMaugh at zoe.mcmaugh@denipt.com.au.
