The Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group (Deni MHAG) will again host a community event, for the seventh consecutive year.
As usual, the theme is ‘Mental health, it’s not as scary as you think’.
The idea behind the popular event, which was attended by more than 750 people last year, is to use trick or treating as a way to create connection and awareness in the community.
Among the trick or treat locations will be the buildings of mental health providers, which Deni MHAG member Lourene Liebenberg said helps showcase there is nothing scary about going to these centres and asking for help.
“Since its inception, integral to the event is to provide information and resources to reduce the stigma around mental health, normalise conversations about wellbeing, and signposting the way to help,” Mrs Liebenberg said.
Deni MHAG coordinates the event with Intereach, Vinnies Services, Community Mental Health Drug & Alcohol, Mission Australia, Woomera and Wellways.
There will be many activities to enjoy, as well as a sausage sizzle and free icy pole at the end of trick or treating.
“It is an event for all ages and brings a lot of enjoyment to many, families connect, being active and learning along the way,” Mrs Liebenberg said.
“We have seen an increase in the number of dads and men attending with their families, and this provides an opportunity to also share the messaging and resources for men specifically.”
The event will be held on Halloween - Friday, October 31 - with trick or treating from 3.30pm and the event wrapping up about 6pm.
Participants will be asked to attend the Deniliquin Waring Gardens first to collect a map of participating trick or treat businesses.
Businesses wishing to participate in or sponsor the event are asked to contact Mrs Liebenberg on 0428 281 060.
Volunteers to help run the day are also needed, and can also contact Mrs Liebenberg.
