Hay fire risk increased

Recent rain has increased the risk of haystack fires.

NSW RFS crews were kept busy over the weekend, responding to six separate incidents across the entire Mid Murray region.

On Sunday, crews attended three separate haystack fires, all believed to have been caused by internal combustion following rainfall in the weeks prior.

Moisture trapped inside hay bales can lead to a build‑up of heat which, under certain conditions, may result in spontaneous ignition without an external flame source.

Crews also responded to a vehicle fire the same day, which is believed to have been stolen and deliberately set alight.

Residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant, as rising fuel prices may lead to an increase in vehicle and fuel theft, particularly in rural areas.

RFS crews also attended two call‑ours relating to permitted burns.

Both incidents were confirmed to be compliant, and no further action was required.

With the Fire Danger Period now ended, fire permits are no longer required, but landholders are reminded they must notify both the NSW RFS and neighbouring properties at least 24 hours before lighting up. Go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify.
