Deniliquin Police Acting Inspector William Middleboork said his arrest last week was aided by members of the community.
“Without the assistance of members of the public who reported the suspicious activity within the park, police would not have been able to recover the property and proceed with charges,” he said.
Police were called to attend the Murray Valley Regional Park on August 19 where two males were allegedly illegally harvesting firewood.
A short time later, one of the men was located in at a home in east Deniliquin.
While at the home, police say they located two Stihl chainsaws.
Subsequent checks revealed both had been reported stolen in two separate break and enter offences in Deniliquin.
One was on August 11 from a Deniliquin business, and the second occurred on August 17 from a Harfleur St home.
Following further investigations, a 33 year-old man was arrested on August 26.
He was charged with two break and enter and steal offences, three counts of harvesting wood in a national park, and three counts of goods in custody suspected of being stolen.
Motorbike stolen
Police are investigating the theft of a motorcycle from a Whitelock St home in Deniliquin.
The bike was on a trailer at the home, and was reportedly taken between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on August 24.

Shoplifting charge
Police have arrested a 32 year-old Albury woman following the alleged theft of clothing from a Cressy St business in Deniliquin.
About 5.30pm on August 27, the woman was reportedly detected by the store manager stealing several items of clothing.
The manager contacted police, who stopped the woman a short distance away.
She was arrested and charged with shoplifting, intimidation and goods in custody suspected of being stolen.
