It wasn’t just the fish ‘biting’

The cod fishing was a little slow for some over the weekend, but some unusual catches certainly kept people amused.

It being the final weekend of the Murray cod season and with the Cast For Cash competition in full swing, there were plenty of lines in the water over two glorious days of sunshine and warmer weather.

Some Cast for Cash entrants landed a few invalid catches, including an unsuspecting turtle caught on a lure as it was making its way down the Edward.

Recreational fishers at Mathoura also reported quite a usual catch.

One angler wrestled with what he thought was going to be an almighty fish, only to discover it was not aquatic at all.

Coming out of the river on the end of his rod instead was a pop-up banner from a well known employment agency group.

Outside of Cast for Cash, a few locals has some success with cod.

Big bowls group

Another big event on in Deniliquin over the weekend was the Deniliquin Bowling Club’s Open premier Fours.

With a massive $10,500 prize pool up for grabs, bowlers from all over the region converged on the club greens for two days of competition in glorious weather.

“There were some incredible bowls played across the weekend,” the club said.

“A massive thank you to everyone who travelled to Deni to compete, and an even bigger thank you to our fantastic volunteers who put in the hard yards to make the weekend happen.”

While most of the winners came from outside the local area, some did have a few locals helping them along.

It’s Legacy Week

It’s Legacy Week, and Deniliquin’s Legacy Group is seeking your support.

Members will be out selling badges and merchandise this week to raise money for Legacy programs, which support veterans and their families.

Deniliquin Legacy Group chairman Trevor David said additional donations also help to support the families of veterans still living in their own homes and to support social functions for Legatees.
