That was one of the powerful messages tennis star turned television personality Jelena Dokic shared with the ABC ahead of her life story being told on Australian Story on Monday night.
And you can expect a similar message will be shared with the people of Deniliquin when she headlines the Brave Enough events tonight and tomorrow.
Many of Dokic’s trails and tribulations stemming from the early years as a tennis star have been laid out for the public to see, including her tumultuous relationship with her perfectionist father, Damir, who was also her coach.
Now in her early 40s, she shares her experiences as a means of promoting and supporting healthy relationships and mental fitness.
"The way that you take power away from … bullies, trolls, violence, abuse, is by speaking up, not by being quiet. When we're silent about it, that's their power. As soon as we speak up, we take that power away from them,“ Dokic told the ABC.
Dokic is in Deniliquin as a guest of the Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group for two special Mental Health Month events.
Tonight’s event is for women only, and sold out early.
Tomorrow’s event is open, and at the time of going to print, there were a few tickets still remaining.
It will be held at the Deniliquin Town Hall from 11am to 1pm. Tickets are $50 each, or $25 for youth and young adults (16-25 years).
Tickets to the event are available at https://www.trybooking.com/DDLVV.
Those experiencing hardship can speak to the team at Vinnies Services - drop in to 74 Wellington St, Deniliquin or call 5881 7411 - about how to access a ticket.
