Locust watch begins

Following the favourable conditions for locust breeding in autumn, there is an increased potential of nymphs hatching in September and throughout spring as the weather warms coming out of winter.

Murray Local Land Services says landholders should be checking hard, loamy red soils near roads, farm infrastructure, crops where eggs are often laid and other sites where activity has previously been seen, for nymph hatching activity.

“Monitoring for activity and reporting any sightings is crucial to helping reduce the risk of increased locust activity and potential impacts to vegetation, pastures and crops which can have devastating economic impacts to landholders and communities,” Murray LLS said.

“Landholders have an obligation to report Australian plague locust sightings or activity to Local Land Services which can be done by calling 1300 795 299.

“Our biosecurity officers can also provide practical on-ground advice, help identify locusts, explain their behaviour and guide landholders on appropriate management options.”
