This month, our Murray Irrigation shareholders will vote for two directors on their Board.
It’s a decision that will affect us all in three ways: MIL’s importance to all our prosperity, the way our communities are perceived and our ability to work collaboratively together and with government.
I don’t want to dwell on the leadership divisiveness across our community only a year ago.
As clearly evidenced in Pastoral Times reporting since then, the leadership transformation across three of our key institutions has been remarkable and is garnering significant attention.
Leaders and their supporters determine our community positivity and the way others see us.
It’s the difference between our communities being able to attract and leverage opportunities or being seen as too negative, divided and disruptive to work with.
Fortunately, this paper has been able to report an extraordinary shift in leadership.
The Deniliquin Chamber Business Awards was a showcase of energy, positivity, and leadership across many sectors of our Edward River community.
A huge number, 16 in fact, of our winners have been selected as finalists in the regional awards, including Murray Irrigation in the Excellence in Customer Service category.
We’ve seen the winner of Business of the Year, our locally founded Intereach, work hand-in-hand with our council to address our community’s childcare crisis.
Our new council has appointed a local group to run our town pool, engaged in a council-community initiative to the Sustainable Communities co-design, been the lead on our Country University Centre with Berrigan, championed health services and so much more (thank you!).
Last year, Murray Irrigation shareholders were one of the instigators of our leadership shift, clearly voting for leadership stability, capability and positivity.
Much has been achieved since then.
Given the next two years of proposed government water buybacks, we should all encourage our MIL shareholder friends to choose to vote and let all nominees know that their business, farm and community relies on their continuing strong, stable and positive leadership.
Yours etc.
