If you haven’t caught a glimpse of the famous mullet belonging to Deniliquin South School student Tom Way yet, you better get in quick.
The Year 6 student will say goodbye to his long hair in two months, opting to do the chop for a great cause.
The mullet, which has been growing for nearly two years, will be shaved off in glorious fashion on May 27. All money raised being donated to the Leukaemia Foundation.
Tom’s luscious locks, which fall mid-way down his back, will also be donated to make wigs for cancer patients.
Tom’s mum, Melissa Way, said while the mullet started off growing “just for the sake of it”, it was Tom’s idea to cut it off to aid cancer research and support services.
“We were having a conversation with him about his aunty Sarah who sadly passed from a brain tumour, and he asked how do we stop cancer,” said Mrs Way.
“His dad (Matthew) and I explained that there was no cure, but there are ways you can raise money and donate money. That’s when he said we should cut off the mullet.”
“We discussed Shave for a Cure and he was very keen on doing that, so he has been growing it ever since.”
Mrs Way said the mullet has gained quite a lot of attention around town.
“Everywhere he goes he gets comments and hi-fives; it (the mullet) definitely turns heads,” she said.
Only three days after setting up the donation page, Tom had already raised $1269 of his current $2000 goal.
“When setting it up I asked Tom how much he wanted his goal to be, he said $20,000. But we settled for a much more reasonable goal of $2000,” said Mrs Way.
“But the support from the community, local clubs and his school has been overwhelming, so he might just make the $20,000 after all.”
Mrs Way said posters will soon appear around town with an easy QR code link so you can donate. In the meantime, you can go to https://worldsgreatestshave.com/donate and search for ‘Tom Way’.
