The result was the establishment of the 8th Indi Light Horse Troop.
And on October 17 and 18, members will be visiting the Rose City to host a display at the Benalla Show.
Troop member Shane Walch said that if all goes according to plan, they’ll also bring some horses for the community to meet.
“Most of this troop were serving members of the ADF from about the mid-1970s-1992,” he said.
“We we're all active serving soldiers in the Australian Armoured Corps.
“Even though we were Armoured Corps soldiers, drivers and crew commanders, we wanted to re-raise the Light Horse Troop for ceremonial parades.
“We've done things like Anzac Day and Remembrance Day,” he said.
“We've escorted the Governor-General.
“And every year we have a regimental get-together commemorating the Charge of the Nek, at Gallipoli.”
One of their most memorable outings was in 1985, when they escorted Prince Charles and Lady Diana at Puckapunyal.
Mr Walch said the troop had members from across regional Victoria, from Seymour, to Cobram and everywhere in between.
“We are the last guys in the unit that are still going,” he said
“We’ve got about 16 members who have served, and about six or seven civilian riders that ride with us.
“We're open to new members joining. If you’re interested come along to the Benalla Show and have a chat.”
Mr Walch said the troop was currently in discussion to see if anyone can bring horses to the show.
“If not, we've still got the tent display for attendees to see what we do,” he said.
“It’s always nice as we’ll get people coming along who’ll tell us their dad or grandfather served at Gallipoli.
“So we offer a bit of nostalgia for the family members.”
