In addition, Deniliquin’s Fire + Rescue NSW brigade has been called to one tree fire in the Murray Valley Regional Park — behind Deniliquin’s Memorial Park.
Deniliquin FRNSW Captain Marty Smith said firefighters were first alerted to the blaze along the echidna trail of the park’s mountain bike trail about 8.56pm Tuesday.
After some difficulty accessing the site in their truck, water was put on the fire to ‘‘make the area safe’’.
Firefighters returned Wednesday morning to put out any hot spots, before the fire was handed over to National Parks and Wildlife Service to continue monitoring.
Capt Smith said while the cause is not officially determined, lightning strike seemed most logical.
The Mid Murray RFS recommends looking for signs of smoke or lightning damage, even several days after a storm, and to call 000 for assistance if necessary.
Water views
After a long fight with arrowhead weeds which have clogged the Waring Gardens lagoons for months, an aqua mower has done an incredible job and the water is clear again.
‘‘Many COVID-related delays prevented this machine and its operating crew from travelling to Deni, and we thank residents for their patience and understanding,’’ Edward River Council said.
‘‘Also, many thanks to the community groups and council staff who tried their best to tackle the weed problem. In the end, we needed a purpose built machine.’’
A range of helpers have aided in keeping the noxious weed at bay, including the Deniliquin Kolety Lagoons Landcare Group and students of Deniliquin High School.
While arrowhead requires long term management and this is unlikely a permanent fix, it is a beautiful sight to see.
And the ducks appreciate it, too.
Movie, music, and fun
‘Movie, music and fun’ night will be held at the Deniliquin Swim Centre on Friday, February 4, set to be an enjoyable family evening.
And based on the results of a community survey, the film to be shown will be Cruella, starring Emma Stone.
It gained the most votes of three choices, with the others being Angry Birds and Sing.
Attendees can watch from the pool or the grass.
Games and music will start from 7pm, followed by the film from 9pm, or after dark.
The Edward River Council organised event is free to attend, and free sausages in bread will be available.
Children under 11 years-old must be with a supervising adult.
Shop local for school supplies
How time flies!
It won’t be long until the youngsters are back in the classroom.
Term one for school in the western division of NSW — which includes most in Deniliquin and district — begins on Monday, February 7.
Those in the eastern zone will return a week earlier, on Monday, January 31.
So if you haven’t prepared for the school year, you’ve got a perfect two week span to do so.
Don’t forget to shop locally for classroom supplies, uniforms, appropriate shoes, and more.
For some great tips and ideas, pick up a copy of the ‘Back to School feature which appeared in the Pastoral Times on Tuesday, January 11.
Wrong number
The Deniliquin Local Health Advisory Committee has asked the community to stop calling the local pathology clinic when waiting for PCR results.
The LHAC acknowledged people are becoming frustrated as they await results ‘‘in excess of seven days and sometimes longer’’, however COVID tests are tested at centres outside of Edward River.
It said the calls have taken up a lot of time as the pathology lab attempts to go about it’s core business.
Test results must be accessed through texting ‘My result’ to 0488 826 524.
‘‘In the absence of a test result/awaiting a test result, people who have been waiting more than a week for a COVID-19 test result may be able to leave self-isolation, provided they have no symptoms,’’ the Deniliquin LHAC said.
Car Club AGM
The Deniliquin Sporting Car Club is holding its annual general meeting on Thursday January 27. All members are invited to attend.
The club says it is member’s opportunity to ‘‘have a say in the running of the club and events’’.
The meeting will be held at the clubhouse on Larcombe Lane from 7pm.
A general committee meeting will be held immediately after.
The DSCC Calendar of Events for 2022 is also available on the club website https://dscc.com.au/.
Please be patient
Hospitality and retail businesses across Deniliquin have put out posts on social media asking customers to be kind and patient during this phase of the COVID pandemic.
While businesses are allowed to operate under minimal restrictions, some have reported staffing challenges which in turn impact the amount of staff on a shift at one time, and sometimes the opening hours of that store.
