Police rescue baby wombat

Rutherglen police rescued baby “Dazza” on Sunday night after coming across a deceased wombat on the Beechworth-Chiltern Road.

Rutherglen Police have rescued an orphaned wombat after its mother was killed by a car.

Leading Senior Constable Darren O'Neill and Senior Constable Lalor were returning from a job in Beechworth on Sunday night when they came across a deceased wombat in the middle of the Beechworth-Chiltern Road.

The wombat was removed from the road when they noticed some movement in the wombat's pouch and a paw waving at them.

After some enquiries with Beechworth Police, they found a local wildlife shelter who were able to assist.

The infant wombat was named "Dazza" after Leading Senior Constable O'Neill.

Dazza is reported to still be doing well today.
