The downpour may help push fresh water through the system, stirring up bait and creating ideal conditions for Murray cod, yellowbelly and carp to move and feed more actively.
Periods of rain and mild flooding tend to push fish into the edges, backwaters and newly covered ground.
Around Deni, that means the lagoons, anabranches and slower pockets off the Edward have been producing well.
As water spills over the banks, worms, grubs and insects wash in, a natural buffet that brings cod and yellowbelly right up into the shallows.
The smaller systems around Deniliquin, including the Wakool, Niemur and the local billabongs, often fish better in wet conditions than the main river.
These waterways warm quickly, carry more food and offer shelter from fast flows.
Cod in particular will sit in these calmer pockets waiting for food to drift past.
