An official NSW State Emergency Service flood watch alert was issued for parts of the Murray River last week, including the stretch between Hume Dam and Tocumwal.
No official warnings are in place for the Edward River at Deniliquin - which is steady at about 2.7m - although flows from Tocumwal normally make their way into the Edward and other tributaries.
The warning, which predicted some minor flooding at Tocumwal, was later reduced on Thursday evening.
However, residents along the Murray and its tributaries are still advised by the SES to monitor conditions.
“The Murray River, Corowa to Tocumwal, will continue to be closely monitored as upstream flows approach peaks in Victoria,” the SES alert said.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s weather station at Deniliquin Airport has recorded 79mm of rain for October so far, with 72.4mm of that recorded in the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday alone.
The downpour forced the closure of croquet courts, bowling greens and the Deniliquin Golf Club’s course on Wednesday. The town’s lagoon system was also overflowing.
In October last year - with the Edward River rising fast because of flows out of Hume Dam - Deni had received just over 31mm by this stage of the month and 187mm by month’s end.
Rain is not predicted for Deni and district again until Saturday, but at this stage there is only a 40 per cent chance of receiving about 1mm or less.
