The Ricegrowers Association of Australia (RGA) taking this step in writing a public letter follows open dialogue with the CEO of MIL and a formal letter to the board, in the matter of Murray Irrigation Limited’s (MIL) proposed new fee structure.
The responses received have not sufficiently addressed the concerns of the RGA members in the Murray Valley, who have directed further action be taken.
RGA members continue to express grave concerns that important questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding the potential impact on both the long-term sustainability of MIL and the ongoing viability of irrigators.
Given these changes would be difficult to reverse once implemented, it is essential that all implications are clearly understood before any final decisions are implemented.
There is a strong view that the current process has not provided sufficient information and has felt rushed.
The RGA acknowledges MIL and their board have undertaken a body of work and analysis of the fee proposal as is their fiduciary duty.
It is for that reason that time should be taken to explain the considerations to customers and address their concerns.
RGA members in the Murray Valley are urging MIL to suspend implementation of the proposal for 12 months to allow for a more thorough, transparent, and meaningful consultation process than has occurred to date.
RGA Murray Valley members believe that a 12-month pause would enable a more robust and inclusive process, supported by clearer information outlining both the benefits and potential drawbacks of the proposal.
It would also allow for genuine engagement with those most affected, ensuring that all perspectives are properly considered.
Sixty Murray Valley RGA members attended this month's RGA Members Summit in Deniliquin, unanimously supporting a temporary pause and further consultation as the most constructive path forward, rather than an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), or MIL pushing ahead regardless of these genuine concerns.
We welcome a collaborative response from MIL to these concerns, expressed overwhelmingly by active water users among Murray Valley RGA members.
Yours etc.
