That was the reality for Deni’s own Owen Tubb, who got to celebrate his 90th birthday with two of them in Deniliquin on Saturday.
With only a few of the original clan of siblings still surviving, Owen was joined by one brother and one sister for celebrations held at the Sportman’s Arms Hotel on Saturday morning.
They were among a crowd of about 70 in attendance, with extended family and friends from all over the country being there for the occasion.
The day was organised by Owen’s wife Jan and daughter Brenda, and was a lovely morning out for the Navorina resident.
Owen’s actual birthday is tomorrow.
More photos from the celebrations will appear in Friday’s edition.
Cheeky kookas
The resident kookaburras at the Deniliquin Golf Club were treated to a sumptuous morning tea and lunch on Sunday - mostly by accident.
Some of those participating in the Diggers Golf Day were caught unaware when the group of four descended in search of food.
One unsuspecting participant lost half of his Anzac biscuit before he realised what was going on.
But others obliged the feathered thieves by throwing them a few more crumbs.
Deniliquin RSL Sub-branch president John Harris also reports losing some of his sandwich after placing it down to take his swing.
“I had put it on top of the golf cart, and when I turned around it was on the ground being munched on,” he said.
Ramland overrun
Spectators’ cars were packed in like sardines at the Hardinge St oval on Saturday for the Deni Rams clash against Mulwala in Murray League action.
While the match ups on the football field and netball courts are always hotly contested, there’s no doubt the increased attendance was in large part due to the Rams hosting its Back to Ramland reunion.
Past players, sponsors and current players and supporters enjoyed two days of special activities which included social functions, guest speakers and plenty of amazing tales shared.
A full wrap up of the weekend’s activities will be included in Friday’s edition.
Cool change subsides
Warmer than expected conditions took a few of the weekend revellers by surprise on Saturday.
Those attending the U3A organised workshops at the Deniliquin Community Gardens dressed for the cool conditions that greeted people the few days previous.
But by the time the session finished up about 12pm, they were all seeking the shade and peeling off layers to avoid the intensity of the sun.
While the Bureau of Meteorology only recorded a top temperature of 21.7ºC - not hot by Deni standards - it was enough of a change from earlier in the week to work up a sweat.
Speaking of working up a sweat, the balmy conditions were a challenge for our sportspeople.
At the Deni Rams ovals, players were coming off the oval and courts as if they had just stepped out of the shower.
You’ve got to give it to them though, they kept playing through.
Mostly sunny days with tops in the low 20s are expected for the rest of this week.
The lows are also expected to be milder, at between 4ºC and 7ºC, rather than the 1.3ºC low recorded on Saturday - the month’s lowest.
