Entries are coming in for the Mathoura On The Map Christmas Lights Competition.
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
The competition is offering $100 each for the best decorated residence and garden, as well as $100 for the Best Decorated Business.
All you have to do to enter is send a text to Eileen Day on 0427 843 526. Provide your name and address, and directions if you are on the outskirts of town.
Judging will take place late on Tuesday, December 21, to enable the judges to see the lights at their best and the winners will be announced the following day.
Good luck to everyone.
Congratulations are extended to local children, Matilda Eddy and Ethan Hadley in this edition.
The two are the captains for Mathoura Public School in 2022.
The result of the election by their peers was announced at the school’s presentation function on Wednesday.
They will take up their positions when school resumes in February 2022.
I’m sure many will agree that they will do a great job in their new roles.
It has been great to learn that the recent referendum on wards in Murray River Council has seen common sense prevail.
The referendum asked residents to vote on whether the current three-ward system should be retained or scrapped.
So far it seems the majority have opted for the retention of the three wards, with three councillors in each.
The next thing we need is for successful candidates in the elections to actually take an interest in the communities they are elected to represent.
In the past, two of those elected as our representatives lived on the outskirts of Moama, and while one of them did take part in a couple of community events or meetings, I doubt that the other one even set foot in Mathoura.
In contrast, Moama Ward representative, Cr Nikki Cohen, has been a frequent (and welcome) visitor, taking part in a number of local community activities.
Because of this I think many locals would like to congratulate Cr Cohen on recently being elected for a second term as deputy mayor.
Congratulations Nikki.
Local students have been ‘in the swim’ undertaking lessons in the Mathoura School swimming pool recently.
While cooler weather interrupted the sessions, they will resume at the start of the 2022 school year.
In the meantime the youngsters are being encouraged to practice what they have been taught during their holidays and return with enhanced skills.
And when they are at the pool they will be in the safe hands of local lad, Seth Langman, who has passed his lifesaving course and been appointed as a life guard at the swim centre.
Mathoura’s Ladies Division 1 side was unfortunate to lose by just three shots to Deniliquin in Friday’s pennant round.
Division 3 had a bye.
The weekend pennant teams had a pretty good weekend with three wins.
Division 1 played a twilight game on their home turf against Moama, and romped home by 12 shots.
Division 2 also played at home, enjoying a seven shot win over Tongala, while Division 4a’s Mathoura Red had an 11 shot win over Echuca Blue.
Division 3 played Lockington at Locky but missed out by 15 shots, while Division 4b Mathoura Blue came home from Lockington without the onions, after falling eight shots short of the home side.
Locals will be saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs Lorna Kurrle last week.
The owners of Mathoura Station, Mrs Kurrle and her husband, the late Cannon Stan Kurrle, were well known and popular members of our community and will be sadly missed.
Condolences are extended to the couple’s family.
The Mathoura Bowling Club’s Christmas Fours Tournament attracted 20 teams from throughout the district.
In addition to being a great day for bowls, the event enabled a catch-up for players who had not seen each other for quite a while because of COVID.
Winners on the day were Garth Whiffen’s team from Rochester, while a home-grown team from Mathoura took second prize, with third place going to the Smith Team from Moama.
Lucky card winners were locals — D McHarry and A Cowley’s teams.
This week has been a very special one for 12 local children.
They are the Year 6 graduating class of 2021 at Mathoura Public School.
The students were joined by family and friends for their graduation dinner at Mathoura Bowling Club on Wednesday evening, before being given a final farewell yesterday.
At the school they walked through an honour guard of their fellow students and each rang the school bell for the last time, before formally exiting the school which had nurtured the majority of them for seven years of learning.
The graduates are wished well as they progress to the next level of their education.
