SIRU skills day draws strong interest

Southern Inland Rugby Union delivered a hands on skills day for Deniliquin High School students at Memorial Park on Wednesday, March 25, with the session attracting strong interest across all year levels.

Despite many students having never played rugby before, the group threw themselves into the drills and game‑based activities, quickly building confidence as the morning progressed.

SIRU development officer Callum Redman said introducing the sport through school based programs is one of the most effective ways to grow participation locally.

“The main one for us is growing the game at the junior level, if we can get kids involved, then they bring their friends along, it can build from there,” he said.

“Getting exposure in the region is really important.”

Mr Redman said school involvement has already shown results in the area.

“School gala days are a big part of that. I know Deni had a bit of success last year with some of the sevens teams.”

He said the message to students is simple.

“Our message is really just to come have a go.”

The session formed part of SIRU’s broader push to expand rugby opportunities across the Southern Riverina, giving students a chance to try the sport in a fun, supportive environment.
