Keynote speaker John Maher shared a deeply personal story of loss and resilience following a car crash which changed his life.
At the age of 42, he was involved in a horrific crash that left him with life-threatening injuries and unable to work.
He later endured the unimaginable tragedy of losing his youngest daughter, Carmen, in 1995 when she fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a tree.
Carmen was just 18.
His story, delivered with honesty and emotion, reinforced how precious life is and highlighted the importance of young drivers making safe choices on the road.
Students were visibly moved by his account, which brought home the reality that road accidents can affect anyone, at any time.
Mr Maher started Carmen’s Legacy in honour of his daughter, and dedicates his time to educating young people about the consequences of unsafe driving.
The message aims to convey to the students and our community how fragile and precious life is and how important we are to each other.
His presentation delivers how we need to make sure that no one’s family receives a message of road trauma and we need to pledge to each other to always keep safe on our roads
This message set the tone for the week-long program, reminding students that the lessons they learn could one day save their lives or the lives of others.
