The Rural Fire Service is urging extra caution, saying some could have been avoided.
On Wednesday afternoon, November 12, the RFS Wanganella brigade extinguished an unattended camp fire beside the Billabong Creek.
RFS Mid Murray Zone district coordinator Gerard James said this was not the first unattended camp fire firefighters have had to deal with.
“We are continually plagued by campers who ignore the danger they are putting locals into by failing to properly extinguish their fires,” he said.
On Thursday, all permits to burn were suspended due to forecasted high fire danger and a harvest safety alert was issued.
That same morning, the Blighty brigade assisted at a small grass fire in Finley and in the afternoon responses to the reignition of a pile burn off Moonee Swamp Rd, Deniliquin.
“The fire at Finley was started by someone fencing, and somehow generated a spark to start the fire,” Mr James said.
“Blighty brigade assisted this fire that was managed by Southern Border.”
Mr James said the Moonee Swamp Rd fire was a timely reminder for landholders.
“It was a reignition of a pile burn from three months ago, and the Birganbigil brigade extinguished this fire,” he said.
“(It’s) just a reminder for all landholders who have conducted pile burns that contained a lot of timber and coals over the winter, to keep an eye on them for reignition.
“Reignition will only happen on our very worst days, such as (Thursday), with high winds that equal high fire danger.”
The other fire call out on Thursday was a 40ha harvest fire near Mokanger and McLaurins Rd at Tuppal.
“The fire was started by a header harvesting grain.
“The fire quickly spread, jumping a road and narrowly missing a neighbouring house and sheds.
“Local crews were supported by RFS crews from Finley, Berrigan and Tocumwal along with heavy plant from Edward River Council.
“A harvest safety alert had been issued for this reason, to try to prevent fires being started from headers.”
Mr James said the fire reignited Sunday, smouldering along the edge of a canola crop, but not causing any further damage. The Birganbigil and Tuppal brigades responded on Sunday.
