Pool open for fun
The Deni Pool has been a hive of activity for much of the summer, thanks in part to the extended summer hours from 10.30am to 7pm.
Lap swimmers are also swimming Monday to Friday from 5.30am to 8.30am.
The Deniliquin swimming facilities include a 50m pool, a medium pool ideal for the kids, a babies shallow pool and a splash park.
You can expect to see children in large numbers at the pool over coming weeks as the annual learn to swim program gets under way.
It runs Monday to Thursday for the next two weeks, from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, for children aged 5-16.
While all learn to swim spots are booked out, there is a waiting list. Go to https://www.trybooking.com/DIJYX to put your child’s name down.
Free mental health training
If you support young people in any way — as a parent, carer, coach, teacher, mentor, or volunteer — here is a great opportunity to consolidate your ability to positively help support youth mental health.
The Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group (Deni MHAG), in partnership with Channel4Change, is offering Youth Mental Health First Aid training.
It teaches adults how to recognise early warning signs, start supportive conversations, and help a young person get the right support.
The 14-hour course will run over two days, with sessions available on February 26 and 27 and March 24 and 25.
Thanks to Brenda Norman’s North Channel Swim, which raised close to $15,000, the course delivery and materials are fully subsidised. It means up to 50 more people can receive training.
Register your interest at https://www.denimentalhealth.org.au/training or by sending an email to lourene@bigpond.com.
Pickleball courts available
If you’re looking for something a bit different and active to do this summer, why not try pickleball?
The sport can be played at the Deniliquin Stadium and is a popular activity, especially while extra friends and family are around for the holidays.
There are court bookings or individual social play options available on Friday and Sunday mornings, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
People are encouraged to use the OpenSports app to make bookings.
Bin care
Summer is here, so it’s time to get prepared with your bins.
All factors can contribute to our bins becoming a breeding ground for bad smells, bugs and, worst of all, maggots.
Some helpful advice to help keep your bins in good shape this summer:
• Cover the food waste in your green lidded bin with grass clippings.
• Keep your bin lids closed and in the shade.
• Flies, pests and smells are due to meat and meat juices.
• If you can, hold off-putting meat scraps in the bin until closer to collection day, even better (pop them in the freezer).
The great thing about the green lidded organics bin is that it goes out weekly, so all the meats, seafood and bones should be in your green lidded bin.
