Summer night boost with market idea

Adam Connally and Libby Drummond with daughter Harriet Connally at Harry Pepper Coffee.

“It’s about art and food and something to do during the long summer nights.”

That is the “basic premise” of a fabulous dream Adam Connally, co-owner of Harry Pepper Coffee, and his wife Libby Drummond have to start a summer night market in Deniliquin.

The ideal location is Sanctuary Lane, wedged parallel between the Edward River and End St, where Harry Pepper is based.

Mr Connally is not the first local below 40 to opine the lack of things to do in the evenings in Deniliquin; newly elected Edward River Councillor Marc Petersen made it part of his election campaign to get more evening events started in town.

The night market would focus on cultural offerings, featuring creatives and artists, art installations and live music.

"I want to get some artists interested and makers and creators and have them show their work,“ he said.

It would also offer food stalls, and possibly even a few pop up bars.

"I would collaborate with the pubs to see if we can’t get a wet area going, so people can have a drink and a pop-up cocktail bar as well.“

While the End St Harry Pepper location is well-loved by customers and owners alike, Mr Connally has been open about the business outgrowing the size of the shop in its one-and-a-bit years of its existence.

"I’m hoping the new space (for Harry Pepper) will be up and running by then, so we can host a cinema and musicians at the new space during the night market,“ he said.

Mr Connally is confident of having about 20 stalls, or so.

Eight or nine stores have already signed, and another 10 have shown interest but are yet to commit.

David K Schoeffel - known to many as the Baron - is the owner of yet to open Cressy St bar, The Storyteller.

In partnership with Mr Connally, he is helping organise the stalls and some of the entertainment.

As a creative and a self-confessed connoisseur of hard liquor, the Baron says he is looking to put on a pop up bar and some art installations.
