Sunshine, shopping and laughter

The normal business of the Deniliquin CBD was heightened at the weekend thanks to the Do It In Deni Street Bazaar.

Complementing normal trading and the second Saturday of the month Naponda Farmers Market, the Deniliquin Business Chamber organised bazaar brought other traders and organisations into the CBD.

With part of the street blocked off and food fans, children’s activities and family games, the centre of Deniliquin became a mall teeming with people.

The crowds spilled into the nearby Deniliquin Waring Gardens, where the famed Deni Dachshund Dash took place as part of the morning (see page 3 for results).

Introduced in 2018, the Street Bazaar was established to specifically target visitors to Deniliquin for the Victorian Labour Day weekend.

Just as popular with the locals, Business Chamber executive officer Donna Taylor said people wasted no time in heading down to enjoy the fun on Saturday.

Getting underway from 10am, she said people were arriving right on the dot and said it kicked off a steady stream of people right up until the event finished at 1pm.

“It was an amazing event and it was so great to see so many people, and so many visitors,” she siad.

“It was a great opportunity so showcase our community, and we were really helped by the weather.

“It allowed everyone to really embrace what Deniliquin has to offer.

“It was also wonderful to see so many retailers and cafes open and well frequented, helping them to recover from the downturn caused by the floods.”

There were consistently long lines at the jumping castle and face painting stands, and the food and coffee vans did a roaring trade.

Along the garden side of the street were a vast array of local makers and producers, and local community groups.

Situated nicely between the market stalls at those at the other end of Cressy St for the farmers’ market was the Blighty Football Netball Club’s stand, where they were overwhelmed with support for their boat raffle.

“The club said they sold more than 80 tickets, which is their biggest selling day to date,” Ms Taylor said.
