The Edward has been running low, and the recent up‑and‑down flows and dirty water haven’t helped, leaving many putting in long hours for only the odd carp or the occasional cod.
Some stretches have been particularly quiet, especially downstream towards the weir, where multiple anglers say they’ve “thrown everything at them” with little reward.
The Billabong Creek and other smaller systems around Deniliquin have also been a point of curiosity, but early reports suggest fishing is no better than the main river at the moment.
That said, there are still pockets producing the odd surprise.
A few early‑morning fishers have managed a cod among the carp, and those willing to push further out, past Four Posts for example, seem to be finding slightly better water and the occasional bite.
The general feeling is that the river is in a holding pattern, tough now, but capable of turning around quickly once levels stabilise and clarity improves.
As always, persistence pays and with conditions shifting week to week, the next good bite might not be far away.
Easter might offer up some opportunities to spend some time out with the rod and reel for some.
