Nigel Lutton used his day off on Australia Day well and pulled in a 57cm cod from the Edward River (Kolety) just north of Deniliquin.
He was fishing from the bank with a standard rod and eggbeater reel combo, using nothing more than a piece of chicken for bait.
It was his first cod over the 55cm legal size caught for the season, after a couple of earlier near misses — one fish snapped the line, and another turned out to be a carp.
With the extreme heat we’ve had as the school holidays come to a close, remember to plan carefully if you’re heading out for a fish.
Fish are far more active in the cooler parts of the day, making early mornings and late evenings the best chance to land a cod or yellowbelly.
During the hottest hours, most species retreat to deeper, shaded water, so slowing down your approach and targeting structure can make a big difference.
Safety is just as important as technique, with the heat posing a real risk around the river.
Anglers should avoid the middle of the day regardless, and stay hydrated, wear sun protection and keep trips short - especially with kids.
With a bit of care, it’s still a great chance to enjoy one last holiday fish before school returns.
People will be out on the water cooling off and sharpening up some skills, and finding some spots ahead of the Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge.
The Challenge is now just a week away, so make sure to register and support the event to help fund more restocking.
Meanwhile, remember to send us your catches. Send your pics and details directly to journalist Eamon Kurta at eamon.kurta@denipt.com.au, to 0498 700 211, or via private message to our Pastoral Times Facebook page.
