Local anglers chasing yellowbelly, or golden perch, have been enjoying some solid results, with worms and live shrimp proving particularly effective baits.
Whether you're fishing from the bank or spending a few hours on the water, yellowbelly can provide plenty of action while Murray cod are off limits renowned for their hard-hitting bites and willingness to take a variety of natural baits.
Working likely snags, deeper holes and timbered edges can often increase your chances of finding success.
A reminder that targeting Murray Cod can come with some heavy fines, including a $500 on the spot fine.
If you unintentionally snag a cod out of season, you must release it back into the water immediately with as little harm as possible, ideally unhooking it while it is still submerged.
And while you're waiting for that rod tip to twitch, why not take part in the Great Aussie Bird Count?
The river system and surrounding wetlands are teeming with birdlife, from parrots and cockatoos through to herons, egrets and waterfowl.
Keeping an eye on the skies can be just as rewarding as keeping an eye on your fishing line.
This weekend is the last weekend to get involved. For more information or to register, visit the Aussie Bird Count website.
