Finally, a big event which didn’t get cancelled at the last minute due to COVID-19. Did anyone else breathe a sigh of relief?
While community safety is important, it was wonderful to see people from Wagga, Melbourne, Jerilderie, Wangaratta and more visit the district for a weekend getaway or to catch up with Deni-based loved ones.
Many commented they hadn’t seen this many people in one weekend for a long time, which is fantastic news for tourism in Edward River.
Sculptors and artisans were showing off some incredible wares, and musicians were certainly setting the atmosphere.
The Rotary Easter Art Show in the Multi Arts Centre was also catching attention of visitors and locals, with many excited to buy a piece for their home or make their pick in the People’s Choice Award.
Bunny visit
The Easter Bunny was out and about on Thursday to wish everyone a happy Easter and collect donations for the Good Friday appeal.
The blue bunny popped into various shops in the Deni CBD before heading to Central IGA Supermarket, to hand out chocolates, to the delight of many.
Breaking 1000
The Navorina Nursing Home $1 million fundraising appeal was about to hit another milestone this weekend.
If you’ve seen the white Toyota Corolla with the ‘win this car’ decals out and about on Cressy or Davidson Sts, you’ll know the fundraising committee has been working tirelessly to sell raffle tickets for the car, and they’ve just about surpassed 1000 tickets.
With the raffle expected to be drawn within the next few weeks, be sure to pop by and purchase one of the 500 remaining tickets to be in the running to win the car.
The fundraising appeal is going toward upgrading the original section of the community nursing home.
The car raffle will be drawn at a gala evening and auction for the nursing home, being held at the Deniliquin RSL Club on April 29.
Rodeo spills
There were plenty of thrills and spills at this year’s rodeo, with the rough stock proving to be tough competition for the cowboys.
While some bulls and bucking horses had patrons holding their breath in anticipation, others decided they couldn’t be bothered bucking and instead had a nice little lay down in the middle of the arena.
Others were very stubborn, not wanting to go back into the gates, clearly enjoying the attention as they paraded around the arena.
Results from Saturday’s Deniliquin Rodeo were not available at the time of going to print yesterday, but you can read more about all the action on page 5 today.
Battle of the Bands
More than 50 people gathered in the Waring Gardens on Thursday to witness the best youth bands from the area battle it out at Battle of the Bands.
Six bands made up of various ages went head-to-head on an assortment of instruments, all hoping to be chosen as the best Edward River band of the day.
Judging the bands were Louise King and Chris Bodey.

Good Friday appeal
Deniliquin’s Fire + Rescue NSW brigade members were busy visiting each of the caravan parks in town on Friday, raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital through the Good Friday Appeal.
They raised a total of $2203.65 from visitors staying at Deniliquin BIG4 Hoilday Park, Riverside Caravan Park and McLean Beach Hoilday Park.
