Toasted and buttered HCBs are a versatile favourite of mine.
Whether as a light breakfast, quick snack or tasty supper, I find they hit the spot, late December through to Easter.
That Hot Cross Buns are available in supermarkets as early as Boxing Day is a contentious issue for some.
I prefer to embrace the opportunity. Aside from the enjoyment factor, post-Christmas Hot Cross Buns remind me that we have Christmas because of Easter.
The details of the Christmas story may seem nicer, and sweeter.
A baby’s birth announced by angels proclaiming peace and good will is undeniably uplifting.
The Easter narrative is darker, featuring betrayal, the condemning of an innocent man, brutality and death.
It has been said that it wasn’t the nails in his hands and feet that held Jesus on the cross, rather, it was his love for you and me.
This evidence of Jesus’ love offers powerful certainty in a world where we never know what tomorrow might bring.
Of course, God’s plan didn’t end with the death of Jesus Christ on a cross.
Jesus rose again, as witnessed by over 500 people during the forty days prior to his ascension into heaven.
For me, the enjoyment of Hot Cross Buns from Boxing Day until Easter is a regular reminder of the amazing, sacrificial love that Jesus demonstrated as he willingly journeyed from the cradle to the cross, all for our sake.
Despite the cost, God fully committed to carrying through his plan for our salvation, from beginning to end.
Likewise, you can trust God’s faithfulness in bringing to pass his good and loving plans for your life.
While I hope you enjoyed a bun or two this Easter, my prayer is that you embrace fully the hope of Easter, the peace and life found only in Jesus.
